Bridging the distance: Staying connected with loved ones across borders

International student Vasiliki shares her top tips to stay in touch with loved ones back home while studying at RGU.

Setting off to explore a new country is like stepping into a whole new world of excitement and possibilities. But let’s be real, being far from the familiar faces of friends and family back home can be really hard. Luckily, in today’s world, distance doesn’t have to mean saying goodbye to those precious connections. Let’s dive into some clever ways to keep those bonds strong, no matter where your travels take you.

1. Embrace technology

In this age, technology is very helpful for staying close even when we’re miles apart. Apps like Skype, Zoom, and FaceTime bring loved ones right into our living space, letting us see their smiles and hear their voices with just a click. Schedule regular video calls for catch-ups, virtual celebrations, or just to share a laugh. It’s like having a piece of home wherever you are.

2. Cultivate shared experiences

Even oceans apart, shared experiences have a magical way of bringing people closer together. Dive into the digital realm by watching movies or playing online games together. It’s like having a movie night or game day with your mates, but without the need for everyone to be in the same room. These virtual adventures create bonds that span continents and leave you with memories to treasure.

3. Send snail mail surprises

In a world of instant messaging, there’s something truly special about receiving a handwritten letter or a surprise package in the mail. Send your loved one’s heartfelt letters detailing your adventures abroad, or surprise them with local treats that give them a taste of your new surroundings. Encourage them to do the same. There’s nothing like the joy of receiving a little piece of home in the post.

4. Plan virtual gatherings

While physical gatherings may not be possible, the virtual world offers endless opportunities for bringing everyone together. Organise virtual game nights, cooking sessions, or book clubs where everyone can join in from wherever they are. Share stories, play games, and enjoy each other’s company. Distance doesn’t have to mean missing out on quality time with your loved ones.

Life in a new country may come with its challenges, but with the support of friends and family, there’s nothing you can’t overcome!
