Painting student Vasiliki shares advice for international students in Aberdeen or those seeking to study abroad to meet new people and make friends. Here are her top tips to navigating new connections in unfamiliar land:
Hey there! Venturing into unfamiliar territory is an exciting ride filled with opportunities for growth and discovery. But let’s face it, finding friends in a new place can sometimes feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. No worries, I will go over a couple of ways for you to go about meeting and connecting with new people when you’re far from home.
1. Embrace cultural exchange

One of the coolest parts about being in a different place is getting to learn more from the locals and share your own experiences. Dive into the local scene, check out events and activities, and you’ll meet folks who share your curiosity for exploring new horizons.
2. Seek out expat communities

Expat communities are like little hubs of connection all around the world. They’re a great way to meet people who understand the ups and downs of being in a new place. Join online groups, attend meetups, and you’ll find a supportive network of fellow travellers who are eager to make new friends.
3. Be open and approachable

Making friends in a new place is all about being open to new experiences and putting yourself out there. Strike up conversations with people you meet, whether they’re locals or fellow expats. Keep it casual and genuine, and you’ll be surprised at how quickly connections can form.
4. Volunteer and get involved

Volunteering is a fantastic way to meet like-minded people and make a positive impact in your new community. Look for volunteer opportunities that align with your interests and values, whether it’s helping out at a local charity or getting involved in community projects. Not only will you be giving back, but you will also be building meaningful connections along the way. You can also find volunteering opportunities at the Union!
I know making friends in a new place might seem daunting, but with a positive attitude and a willingness to step out of your comfort zone, you’ll find friends in no time!

For me, the main thing was realising that I am not alone and there are many students in the same situation as mine. We found a way to each other.
