My path to becoming a Quantity Surveyor through RGU

RGU alumna and Quantity Surveyor Katarzyna shares with us her journey studying Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management at RGU and insights on the exciting career opportunities available within this field.

Tell us a bit more about yourself

My name is Katarzyna Lisowska. I am originally from Poland, and moved to Aberdeen seven years ago. I applied to RGU in 2020 to study Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management, graduating in June 2023. Currently, I am working as a Quantity Surveyor at Space Solutions in Aberdeen.

What inspired you to study Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management at RGU?

While preparing for the Mature Exams in Poland, I studied some technical subjects, including land surveying and geography. I really enjoyed it and did not want to lose what I had achieved in Poland when I moved to Aberdeen.

That’s why I looked for a course which would include some subjects I had studied. When I found the Quantity Surveying Course at RGU, it seemed to be a perfect option for me. I did carry out some research as this was totally new for me. You would be surprised by how many people aren’t aware of this occupation and how exciting it is!

After that, I applied for the course, which included successfully completing an English Language Exam. Then, I was please to be accepted on the course.

What was the highlight of your degree?

While studying Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management, I met so many people and built up new connections. I can definitely say that the support I received from lecturers is what I appreciated the most. I wouldn’t be where I am without their support and understanding.

Alongside this, I really enjoyed every single subject and even the long nights spent studying. My favourite thing about the course is that it really prepares you for the work environment. Many projects we were involved in were real projects. There is no better way to learn than looking at the drawings, budget cost and desk study, and attending the construction sites to see the “real” progress, and the works carried out.

This course really emphasises self-study, which makes it a perfect choice if you are self-motivated, creative and attentive to details.

The Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management course is a great opportunity for those who really know what they want to do after finishing school, as well as for those who are not too sure about their career at that stage. The course itself is inspiring and the number of opportunities and different career routes which you might take after graduation has been surprising.

How has your time at RGU supported your career?

Now looking back at my time spent at university, I am grateful for the routes it has opened me up to. The opportunity gave some ideas of what I can study next and, to be honest, I am more than happy that I have so many choices!

I am grateful to have started working as an Assistant Quantity Surveying while studying at RGU as it gave me a chance to actually see how the typical day of a Quantity Surveyor looks like. Quantity Surveyors are in demand as we look after construction budget and make sure the project is progressing smoothly in terms of cost, time and quality.

Any tips for current and future students?

Yes, I have many tips for students who are thinking of studying Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management, or already are:

  • Think about your future. Quantity Surveyors are valued professionals who play a crucial role within construction. The number of job opportunities might positively surprise you and it is a profession that is recognised world-wide, so even more opportunities to come!
  • Career development. If you are a person who wants to continue studying while working, it is a perfect opportunity. There are many courses that can elevate your career. Pursuing career advancement can improve job satisfaction, open new opportunities, and illuminate continued learning pathways.
  • No project is the same, so every day is different as a Quantity Surveyor. This makes your work exciting, and you develop your knowledge every day.

I understand it can be a tough decision for people to move from their home country to the UK. The language barrier, different culture and environment might cause difficulties, but once you find your goal its easier than you think!

If you are unsure or if you struggle please ask the RGU Team, they are more than happy to help!
