We’re very excited to introduce one of our new degrees, BA (Hons) Criminology. Studying Criminology at RGU is all about examining the complex nature of crime, why people commit it, how society and the criminal justice system respond to it and how it could be prevented.
We’ve been chatting to our course developers, David Christie (from our Law School) and Chris Yuill (from our School of Applied Social Sciences) to understand the degree a little more. Here are five things they told us that you’ll want to know about the new BA (Hons) Criminology degree here at RGU:
1. You’ll learn from real life examples
Rather than focusing on theory and then applying this to hypothetical scenarios. At RGU, we start your learning with real life examples. From here we will then discuss the theories and perspectives to help you learn and understand why a crime may have been committed.
2. It’s going to get hands-on
Our students will not only learn from real life examples, but we’re also giving you actual practical experience. On our campus in Aberdeen, we have a ‘Crime Scene House’ which is made to look like a crime scene. Here you will be able to practice the forensic techniques you have learnt during the course. And it doesn’t end there, we also have our very own Moot Court. This is a mocked-up court room where students can present findings and arguments like they might in a real court room.
3. You’ll understand a range of perspectives
We will teach you to understand and draw on a range of perspectives including sociology, psychology and law, giving you the skills and knowledge to not only understand crime and deviance, but to also pursue a wide range of careers upon graduation.
Some examples of potential careers and jobs you may consider are: crime analyst, police officer, social worker, youth worker, detective or roles within the civil service.
4. You might not always find the answer
Modern life is just, simply, complicated and there often aren’t easy answers as to why someone has committed a particular crime, but once you have completed our BA (Hons) Criminology degree you will be equipped with an expert understanding of the different perspectives and factors which help to understand and explain people, and their behaviour, better.
5. You will have a tailored course experience
We designed our Criminology course from scratch, drawing on the expertise and experience of our teaching across a number of areas. Rather than being limited to expertise from one specific discipline, we’ve worked across RGU to pick topics that together are the best fit for our graduates.
