MSc Project Management student Favour has recently been awarded a Global Accreditation Center (GAC) Scholarship, which will give her the opportunity to use her skills to meet the needs of an organisation.
She shares with us why she chose to study at RGU, her experience so far, and how the scholarship will benefit her.
What influenced your choice to study MSc Project Management at RGU?
During my search for a school to obtain a master’s Degree in Project Management, I came across quite a lot of universities offering Project Management in the UK, but remained unsatisfied about the course modules being taught at most of them.
However, I was excited to learn that RGU had received major accreditations in Project Management including the Business School of the Year Award and the Scottish university of the year 2021 which provides the institution with an edge over others.
I also became enthusiastic about the 12-month work placement available in the extended master’s route which will be immensely beneficial to my growth in this chosen field, beside relevant trainings received through the theoretical and practical components of the course.
What did you think about moving to Aberdeen?
Initially, I was sceptical about studying in Aberdeen because of unfounded reasons such as the cold and windy weather which seemed unfriendly. What was I thinking? This turned out to be an amazing decision!
Having weighed my options, I realised that studying in Aberdeen was the cherry on top of the cake for me. I was optimistic that the knowledge gained academically while encountering multicultural ideas and networking with individuals from diverse countries and communities would usher in expertise and creativity to my place of work.
Having visited Aberdeen during previous holidays prior to making this decision, I became ecstatic at the thought of returning to the calm and beautiful city for a more adventurous experience. I was looking forward to discover the beautiful scenery and historic monuments such as: the Aberdeen Art Gallery, His Majesty’s Theatre, The Art Studio, The Scottish Highlands, Balmoral and Royal Deeside, The Gordon Highlanders Museum, and the coastal villages of Aberdeenshire.
How has been your experience studying at RGU so far?
Studying at RGU provided me with a learning balance. I built both hard skills – including Ms projects Gantt Chart, Work Break Down Structure, Risk Management, Quality Management, Portfolio and Program Management, Benefit Realization, Strategic Project Management – and soft skills – including presentation techniques, communication and critical thinking – through taught modules.
I also benefited from a wide range of services made available during my studies such as the free sport membership and beautiful views of the River Dee which made my experience in RGU even more memorable.
How will the GAC scholarship be of support?
Although the financial support provided by the Project Management Institute subsidised my second year tuition fee and eased off some financial burden, the GAC Scholarship goes beyond the financial support provided by PMI and provides immense benefits.
Following the recognition received for a commendable application of project management tools and techniques, the scholarship will support my aspiration to assume the position of a Consultant in order to familiarise and guide project-based organisations on stated mechanisms to improve project management practices.
Do you have any tips to current or prospective students?
Firstly, I congratulate student desiring to study or already studying at RGU. You stand a chance to a bright and exciting future as this will be a stepping stone in your career with a landscape of opportunities.
However, you must pay attention and respond positively to opportunities available. Although there are similar scholarship opportunities and privileges presented or communicated by the school, you have the responsibility to subscribe to these opportunities with efforts such as asking meaningful questions and putting in a convincing application if eligible. Remember to always put your best foot forward and you will achieve anything you set your mind to!
