My coaching placement experience with RADS

Applied Sport ad Exercise Science student Josh shares his experience on a coaching placement with the Russell Anderson Development School.

Can you tell us a bit more about your placement?

My placement consisted of teaching and coaching children, which benefits them through improving various life, social and physical development skills. I worked closely with Seaton Primary and Greyhope Primary which helped to develop my coaching methods whilst meeting some fantastic children along the way.

What experience have you gained from your placement?

I would say I have been able to develop my confidence during this time. I now feel confident to run a class or handle a tough situation whilst also demonstrating that I can work with others in a way that benefits the children the best. Furthermore, I believe I am better now at taking initiative, quick thinking when an unexpected incident may take place, and having the confidence to sort the problem. Helping those involved is a good feeling.

What have been the highlights of your placement?

My highlights have been learning new skills, meeting and coaching some incredible individuals, and working closely with the football team at Seaton Primary. Seeing the joy that goes along with being part of a team and having the opportunity to represent their primary schools means a lot to the children and I enjoyed helping them discover this passion.

I also enjoyed having the opportunity to take part in the RADS summer camps where it was great to work with a real mix of children. This experience allowed me to further develop my adaptability skills when it comes to coaching.

How has your placement complimented your studies?

I believe that increasing my confidence has run throughout. Teaching a class has benefitted my communication which I can apply to some life presentation assessments. I now feel confident to stand and speak and talk through various things knowing I am being respected and acknowledged.

The role has shown the physical benefits that can stem from exercise at a young age which relates to assessments regarding youth in and around sport. Seeing this first hand has certainly helped cement this knowledge.

Would you recommend a placement at RADS and why?

I would definitely recommend a placement with RADS. I believe the skills you gain are crucial for any role within the industry – confidence, communication, adaptability, thinking on your feet and being able to handle delicate situations. The other coaches have taught me so much and have been supportive in every way. RADS helped me during a time where I was unsure what career path I wanted to go down, showing me that taking pride in your work and helping others with your skills is something I would pursue as a career.
