How studying Management with Marketing helped kickstart my career

RGU alumnus Rohan Angus graduated in 2020 with a BA (Hons) Management with Marketing degree and is now working as a Marketing & Communications Assistant for VisitAberdeenshire. He shares how his course, and especially his placement, helped him kickstart his career.

Now four years into my marketing career, I’m still very grateful for my experience at Robert Gordon University as my time studying Management with Marketing helped prepare me for the world of work. My experience at RGU positively shaped who I am today and who I am surrounded by, having met friends I’ll now have for life.

Why did you choose RGU?

I knew after completing my Higher National Diploma (HND) in Business Management at Dundee & Angus College that I wanted to find my feet in a bigger city, with bigger opportunities. Whilst also being attracted to the fantastic employability record and placement scheme of the university, Aberdeen was just a stone’s throw away from all my family and friends in Angus and Tayside.

What attracted you to study BA (Hons) Management with Marketing?

I’ve always been particularly passionate about marketing as it is a field where creative individuals can flourish. The BA (Hons) Management with Marketing course offered a third-year placement route which greatly appealed to me as it was a fantastic opportunity to get my foot in the door and meet people who work in the sector.

I undertook a placement as the Marketing & Technology Assistant at Aberdeen Sports Village (ASV) – something I will always be thankful for. I continued to work at ASV for almost three years where I gained so much valuable experience, making this a perfect first-step in my career.

If you have the opportunity, do a placement! This is such a fantastic way to kickstart your career and I can’t recommend it enough.

What was the highlight of your degree?

Winning the Rookie of the Year Award at Aberdeen Sports Village is still something I’m proud of. I took everything I learnt in the first two years of study into the role, which made all the hard work feel invaluable.

The friends I met along the way is of course another major highlight, as prior to moving to Aberdeen I’d had always been a bit shy. The opportunity to meet new people helped me grow in confidence and come out of my shell.

What did you like best about studying in Aberdeen?

Aberdeen is home to an array of warm and welcoming student accommodation. I spent my first year at the Woolmanhill Flats where I met great people. This is an ideal spot to enjoy the fun nightlife of Aberdeen, but also to visit the landmarks found throughout the city such as Aberdeen Art Gallery, Marischal College, and the beach.

I was a bit worried about moving to a city when I didn’t own a car. However, I quickly found out how accessible everything is. It’s much easier to get around than I thought!

How has your degree supported your career?

My time at Robert Gordon University gave me a great base of knowledge to take into my graduate position, whilst also helping me grow in confidence as an individual.

I believe the placement opportunity at RGU provided me with a clear pathway into the world of marketing. I’m not sure where I would be if I had not taken the opportunity!
