Achieving career success after graduation

The Careers Team at RGU shares the resources available to you as a graduate to help you achieve career success, alongside a testimonial from RGU alumna Elaine who secured her graduate role with the help of the team.

So, after years of hard toil, you’ve finished your studies, passed your assignments and secured your dream degree. All the hard work has paid off and you’re all set for what comes next.

If you’re a new graduate looking to move into the world of work, this can be a hugely exciting time, but it can also bring uncertainty and difficulties. All of a sudden you’re faced with the reality of making that transition from established student to hopeful applicant.

Where do you start? How can you gain the necessary work experience when you are just starting off in your career? What is a good strategy for finding the right job?

There are many questions to consider, but the good news is that, here at RGU, we understand the challenges you’re likely to face and we have a range of resources to support you during your time at university – and beyond.

Graduate Success Toolkits

A good first port of call is our suite of Graduate Success Toolkits, which have been designed to help newly graduating students hit the ground running when they enter the world of work.

The three toolkits cover the topics Discover what you want, Making it happen and Become Professional, and are valuable resources to help you understand and realise your career ambitions in your chosen field.

“Discover what you want” toolkit

The “Discover what you want” toolkit features advice on:

  • Understanding yourself and what you want;
  • Discovering what opportunities are out there; and
  • How to research your ideas in more detail.

“Making it happen” toolkit

The “Making it happen” toolkit focuses on:

  • Understanding your industry;
  • Making connections; and
  • Making applications.

“Become professional” toolkit

The “Become Professional” toolkit offers advice for when you first enter the workplace including on:

  • Expectations for your new role;
  • Building your professional identity; and
  • Tools for the workplace.

The toolkits are available on eHub, our online careers information and advice resource which contains a wealth of information to help you develop and demonstrate your employability. Current students can explore the graduate success toolkits via this link, while our graduates can access alumni versions here.

Support from Careers Consultants

In addition to these resources, RGU graduates can continue to benefit from the continued support of RGU’s Careers Team for a period of two years after graduation. Our Careers Consultants provide expert advice on a range of employability issues and can support with CVs and applications, researching the labour market, exploring further study options and preparing for interviews. To request an appointment, either book via AskRGU or email careers@rgu.ac.uk.

One former RGU student that benefited from the support of the Careers Team is Elaine Ferrao, who quickly landed her dream job as a Graduate Site Manager with Kier Construction after securing a master’s degree in Construction Project Management in July 2023.
