My experience as a student in Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management

RGU student Kimberley shares with us her experience of studying Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management at RGU, and why she chose the field.

Can you tell us about yourself?

My name is Kimberley, I’m in my second year of Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management at RGU. After leaving full-time education, I started working as an Office Junior for a construction company in Aberdeenshire. Within weeks, I was promoted to a full-time administrative assistant.

During my time there, I gained valuable experience in different roles, going on to become a Retrofit Coordinator. I wanted to further my career and when I looked at things I liked doing in my current role, quantity surveying was one of my interests.

I joined RGU in September 2023 and was able to gain direct entry to the second year of the four-year course. I’m enjoying my studies so far and I look forward to the future.

What inspired you to study Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management at RGU?

Before applying to university, I attended an Open Day at RGU. This event had a huge impact on my decision to study here. I spoke with the Course Leader in regards to my experience and interest in the course, and from there I was encouraged to apply for direct entry to year 2 which was a fantastic opportunity for me.

The support and encouragement I received from the lecturers made me feel confident in my decision, and I knew that I would receive the best education at RGU.

What has been the highlight of your degree so far?

The highlight so far for me has been the content of the course’s modules. The way the course is structured allows content from one module to flow well into others.

The skills I gained in semester 1 have been helpful in semester 2, especially with the stage 2 project. This involves measurement, cost estimating and cost planning which are all fundamental skills required in the role of a QS.

How do you feel RGU is preparing you for your future career?

RGU organised a few guest speakers from local businesses to come in that were in the construction industry. I have been able to ask questions to quantity surveyors in practice to find out what the role is like and for their knowledge of how to approach different types of projects.

The stage 2 project I’m currently undertaking involves collaborative working and there is a Quantity Surveyor who works in practice who comes in to assist us with queries and to ensure we are completing work at a professional standard.

Any tips for future students considering studying the same course?

If you are thinking about this course or attending RGU, attend the open days and experience the campus and the studios. I’ve previously mentioned it but these open days are what made my decision to study at RGU. You can ask any questions you have about the course or life at RGU. It’s a great experience to meet other students and get their experience of the course.
