Vegan places to eat in Aberdeen

For those of you who have arrived in Aberdeen or Aberdeen natives who just aren’t aware, there are loads of vegan alternatives for you in Aberdeen! Here are a list of fab places to find a vegan bite in Aberdeen that I love:

Bonobo

After successful crowdfunding campaign, pop-up café Bonobo has opened Aberdeen’s first fully vegan café. The Café works with local suppliers and other co-ops and offers a wide range of delicious vegan food: breakfasts to die for, various lunch options (mac and cheese, haggis roll, seitan kebabs, red wine seitan stew, lentil dahl, chilies and many, many more!). They also offer sandwiches and wraps (hoisin jackfruit, winter nut roast, stuffed seitan, BBQ tofu) and fantastic cakes! The café itself is quite small but they have a lovely garden where they grow some veggies, herbs and flowers. They also do yoga and meditation.

Wagamama

Wagamama always had some vegan options on their menu (mostly starters) and couple mains that could be veganised. Back in October 2017 they launched their fully-vegan menu featuring 12 options and oh my, they are so good! Just look at that ramen with shichimi-coated silken tofu, grilled mushrooms, udon noodles, pea shoots, chilli and coriander and pad thai!

Yo!Sushi

Yo!Sushi also has various vegan options. Their tofu katsu curry has been voted “Best vegan curry” by PETA. Once you try it you’ll be craving it all day – everyday! You can go to YO! Sushi at Bon Accord or Union Square to enjoy the food and Japanese inspired atmosphere or order in! On the photo: miso soup, tofu katsu curry, kaiso seaweed, vegetable dumplings, cucumber maki, vegetable gyozas, vegetable chanchan, vegetable yakisoba, inari nigiri, pumpkin katsu. They also have avocado roll, but unfortunately, they have mayo. Luckily, you can ask not to add mayo to your maki and voilà – another vegan option to enjoy!

Pizzas

Pizza! Who doesn’t love pizza?! Good news for the vegans of Aberdeen – there are plenty of vegan pizza options out there! Pizza Hut and Papa Johns have vegan pizzas and sides. Not too long ago Pizza Hut launched vegan cheese pizzas and their garlic bread is also vegan! Papa Jones offers vegan cinnamon knots and most of their sauces are vegan (Barbeque, Hot Buffalo, Special Garlic (not Garlic and Herb, that has egg in it!) and Sweet chilli. Another popular pizza place in Aberdeen is Pizza Express, which has a vegan pizza and their other options can be veganised. Zizzi is also a popular choice for pizza and offer a fully-vegan menu.

If you are looking for takeaway options, Mr Chips in Rosemount does vegan sausages and white pudding. Not too far away from Mr Chips there is a great Chinese takeaway “Ricebox” that provides various vegan option and has vegan-friendly staff. Most supermarkets offer vegan sandwiches which is ideal if you are on the go and just need a quick bite.

The Braided Fig

The Braided Fig is a great place for more special occasion dinners and they offer a fully vegan menu. Options are quite simple yet mouth-watering. I had my graduation dinner there and the food and staff were extremely lovely.

And of course vegan option can be found at Gray’s School of Art, Faculty of Health and Social Care and Garthdee House Annex on campus!

Luckily, more and more cafes and restaurant around Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire are starting to offer vegan-friendly options so you are most likely to find whatever food you are looking for to satisfy your vegan taste buds!
