How time flies! I have reached the 6 month mark of my year-long placement at RGU’s central marketing team. Crazy. It seems like it was only yesterday when I was sitting in the reception anxiously waiting to be called in for my interview.
RGU is most recognised for its graduate employment rate and placements are a big thing the university offers to prepare students for when they graduate. Prior to starting placement, I thought I would be doing the same work every day and be given the tasks that were at the bottom of everyone’s piles. But I was definitely wrong; I have learnt more on this placement than I have in my last 2 years at uni. The practical experience has given me new skills and knowledge that I couldn’t have learnt sitting in a lecture. There’s always an opportunity to get involved with the projects and I’m trusted with having full responsibility with tasks.I have been lucky enough to do a lot of varied and interesting work in the marketing team. I have been focused on building the student blog, creating emails to send out to prospective students and posting on social media connecting with all of you!
Here are some Postcards I made to promote the RGU Student Blog
As well as my understanding and knowledge in marketing growing, I have also developed interpersonal and teamwork skills. I have learnt how to adapt to my surrounding and how to work with people at all levels. This is really important as the ability to work in a team and with your colleagues is essential in every type of job. Working in a team with people who are experienced in this field has been valuable in itself as observing my colleagues work ethic and marketing knowledge has been very motivating.
Going on a placement year and working with professionals can be a nerve wracking thought but RGU don’t forget about you! I’m still a student and the placement office have made sure that I’ve been getting on okay by setting up reviews every 3 months with my line managers, Sean and Camilla. This is a great chance to review the progress I have made, address any problems if there are any and to create an action plan for the next 3 months of things I hope to learn and achieve.
I have really appreciated this opportunity to do a placement with RGU instead of undertaking the third year taught route. I have already learnt so much within 6 months and I still have another 6 months to learn even more. I am definitely a lot more prepared for graduating uni and starting a career. For one, I don’t fall to the ground at the thought of full time work anymore and it has made me realise that marketing is the right career path for me.

If you want more information on this or want to see if the course you’re interested in studying has a placement option, you can visit the RGU Placement page to get all the info. I recommend you all do it!
